Goal

Our goal as a team was to redesign a better and thorough onboarding experience for new users signing up as either a Client or Provider and creating a new onboarding experience for Organizations signing up as well.

Discover
Heuristic Evaluation

In the Discovery Phase I decided to make a Heuristic Evaluation of the Mizaru website itself to gain a better idea of what needs to be improved and what could stay the same.

Discover
Competitor Analysis

When we were introduced to Mizaru much of the project was already finished, yet there was still some UX aspects missing, hence why my team and I were brought on to fill in some gaps. There was still much to discover and research about what makes or breaks a good onboarding process. So, we decided to make a Comparative Analysis to understand what our competitors did and what worked for them.

Define
Persona

A Persona was made to help me understand what a user pain points might be. Since my core responsibility was to focus on the client I based my persona off of a client who may use Mizaru

Develop
Sketches

Although many of the screens were already developed before we were brought on to the team, there was still a need to sketch these screens and to see what could be improved after the Discover and Design Phase. These sketches helped us to understand what was missing and really establish what was necessary to make a functioning and efficient screen. As a team we made the decision to not design Lo-Fi Wireframes since the major screens were already built previously. We decided to build off of those.

Design
Hi-Fi prototypes

When designing the Hi-Fi prototypes, I was working off of the designed screens that were made by the previous designers. During this phase I made a few major changes.

Previously there was no section for users to answer the COVID-19 questionnaire and no place for them to upload their vaccination card, I then made a new section along with an exemption form link for those who needed to opt out.

When giving your personal information there was no space for users to put in their language preferences, this would inhibit users who speak a language other than English to choose a language that fit them best.

I added a section which allows a User to add their preferred language, this change will increase engagement with viewers by providing them with a better user experience.

Relating back to the Heuristic Evaluation there was a severity problem with required and optional questions. My team and I made the conscious decision to add the word “REQUIRED” when questions were necessary instead of the usual asterisk that some websites and apps use. We realized that many of the users would be using an interpreter or assistive technology that would aide in specifying required fields.

Takeaway

This particular project showed how easy it can be to overlook the minor details that could possibly make or break a application or web’s onboarding process, such as an exemption form for someone who has opted out of receiving a vaccine. It is beyond necessary to take time so that the user has the most pleasant experience and so that the company can get the needed information from a user without doubling back later on.
