FitFocus
FitFocus is a fitness app that focuses on maintaining your personal health through fun workouts, connects you with friends and rewards you for being consistent.
Role: UI, UX Designer, User Research, User interviews, Usability testing
Tools used: Figma

Goal
My goal was to redesign an app and to integrate a message experience throughout the product that drives engagement and repeat usage.
Research
Quantitive Research
I was able to conduct face to face interviews with my target audience which were ones who were between the ages of 18-34 years old, tech savvy and visited the gym frequently. With this group in mind I scouted a group of individuals who met that criteria and sought to find their likes, dislikes and wants in their current fitness apps.

"I'd love an app that supports me and gives me a reason to continue my fitness journey. I need inspiration."
Ideate
User Flow
A user flow was created to help me comprehend how users will possibly interact with the app, It also gives me some insight on possible routes a user might take to complete a task and the best way to get there, and helps me to identify areas that might be difficult to use.

Design
Lo-Fi prototype
Creating a Lo-Fi prototype helped me to visualize the basic structure of the user interface and to establish the outline of the app. I was also able to test this prototype with my target audience and gain a better understanding of what they liked or disliked.

Design
User Feedback
With my Lo-Fi prototype my goal was to test the usability of the app and to be open to any possible iterations. I received some great feedback.
"The screens are simple to understand and it reminds me of other apps I use daily."
"I would love to see how color is incorporated into the app. Is there any other way you can interact with friends besides messaging?"
"How will it look if I were to block someone and is it possible to unblock them? How would that look?
Design
Hi-Fi prototypes
With my final design my goal was to tackle the concerns from the user feedback and to refine the app. One user mentioned having a way to communicate with friends that doesn't involve messaging. This lead me to create a system that rewards you for being consistent on the app and allows you to compare and compete with friends to gain more points.

Testing
User Usability
With the final round of testing I was able to uncover how users felt about the final design
"When I win badges it feels like a game! It encourages me to do so much more and gain more points."
"I like the messages! It lets me know when my friends are online but I also have the option to be offline if I don't want to be bothered."
"In the case I need to block someone it allows me to do so easily without going through hoops. It also blocks out the persons photo!"
Takeaway
During this design process It was made clear to me just how vital accessibility and simplicity was to the user when using this app. Above anything else the User wanted a sense of familiarity and a painless interaction when using the app. Going forward with possible iterations, I’d like to explore different ways to use the XP point system, perhaps giving users the option to use their XP for discounts on gym related items or even gift cards.
